  • Summer Camp Weapons Course

It is not often that one has the opportunity to learn classical kungfu weapons. Normally they are taught only to advanced students who have shown their worth.

To prevent kungfu weapons being lost in future, Grandmaster Wong is offering a weapon course at the 2007 UK Summer Camp where participants can learn three of the five most spectacular weapons. Normally it takes a few months to learn just one weapon, but because of Grandmaster Wong’s incredible teaching skills, you can learn three weapons in a four days!

Nevertheless, you need the following three conditions.

    1. You must have some previous martial art experience.
    2. You should familiarize yourself with the routines of the weapon sets before attending the course. Please click here which will link you to the various weapon sets.
    3. Be prepared to work very hard!

Below is a brief description of the weapons to choose from.
    1. Shaolin Travelling Dragon Sword. Traditionally, the sword was the most preferred weapon of scholar-warriors. Its combat application against long, heavy weapons manifests elegance and profundity.
    2. Travelling Dragon Thirteen-Technique Spear. The spear is regarded as the “king” of weapons because its “shoot” technique is technically the most difficult to counter. And there are thirteen techniques.
    3. Green Dragon Crescent Moon Knife. This is the famous Kwan-Tou set that many kungfu practitioners want to learn but have no opportunity to. It was a kungfu tradition that one knew this set was not only a great warrior but also righteous and courageous.
    4. Travelling Dragon Crescent Moon Spear. It is a sophisticated weapon and is rarely taught. It incorporates the features of seven weapons, namely the spear, the big knife, the trident, the hook, the sword, the dagger and the staff!
    5. Taming Tiger Big Trident. It symbolizes appearance and reality. It appears to be a heavy, clumsy weapon, but in skillful hands it is agile and versatile.
    6. There has been some request to learn the Butterfly Knives. If many people want to learn it, we shall forward the request to Grandmaster Wong. Grandmaster Wong has two Butterfly Knives sets, one from Uncle Righteousness of Southern Shaolin or Hoong Ka, and another from Sifu Choe Hoong Choy of Wing Choon. The main different feature is that in the Hoong Ka set both knives strike together, whereas in the Wing Choon set one strikes after another. For example, in the Hoong Ka set you may slash an opponent’s arm and neck with both knives at the same time, whereas in the Wing Choon set you may slash his arm, or neck, with one knife, and immediately slash again at the same spot with the other knife. Grandmaster Wong will integrate the two set into one.

Understandably it is not an easy to choose three out of these remarkable weapons. Just to learn one is a treat. Imagine you now have the chance to learn three!

    Kind regards

    wow...

    *jaw hits floor*

    B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Butterfly Knives???

    *wibble*

I have to do Lion Dance this year, now I 'have' to save for the weapons course too, you've made it too irresistable!

Not to mention saving money to bribe enough people to add requests for the Butterfly Knives!... hmmm I think I may be forced to start a thread to win over your hearts and minds fellow weapon-lovers - be warned!

Other than that, for me, it's the Travelling Dragon Sword, now I just have to choose between the Cresent Moon Spear or the Travelling Dragon Spear...

    Ooh, how lucky are we?!

      Sigung,

With my greatest gratitude, thank you for taking the time to write about these wonderful weapons for us all to benefit from.

Sifu, thank you for your advise. My choice of weapons are:

      1) Shaolin Travelling Dragon Sword

      2) Travelling Dragon Thirteen Technique Spear

      3) Green Dragon Crescent Moon Knife

Warmest regards to everyone and I look forward to seeing you all at summer camp if not sooner.

        I have revised my vote this time to;

        1. The spear,
        2. The trident,
and I have been seduced by the novelty of the
        3. Butterfly knives.

However, I do anticipate the sword being taught, judging by the last poll.

        Many thanks,
        Alasdair.

Although I voted for sword, spear and trident in the other poll, I have noticed that trident doesn't seem to be very popular. Shame. This new addition of the butterfly knives is very interesting. As Knives are the weapons we are most likely to encounter in real life, (although I seriously hope I don't!) I think it would be wise to understand how they work.
So my new choice is Travelling dragon Sword, Travelling Dragon Spear and... (Claire goes "yippie!")...the Butterfly knives.

                  Sije Claire,

Looks like you are going to have to sell your TV to raise funds for the weapons course (hahaha). I'll take the TV off your hands if you want.....as a favour of course. This might be a blessing in disguise for you sije as without the TV you may be bored into doing more Zhan Zhaung. This weapons course is just going to be so special isn't it!

                  All the best everyone.

Ok, I've just checked out the Travelling Dragon Thirteen-Technique Spear
and the Travelling Dragon Crescent Moon Spear videos and while the spear is very elegant, I like versitility of the slashy-pokeiness of the Cresent Moon Spear

Yes, slashy-pokiness is a technical term

I understand what some of you guys were saying on the old thread about working with a heavier weapon, but to be honest, the Cresent Moon knife looks way to heavy for someone my size to wield!

                            Hello to you all,

Just a quick reminder that this poll ends on Monday (19th March). If you want to influence what will be taught on the weapons course, you need to make your voice heard sooner rather than later.

Can I also quickly mention that if anyone is planning to attend the Weapons course (instructors included!) and you haven't reserved your place then you need to contact me now. Places on this course are strictly limited due to its nature. I.E. we can only have a certain number of people safely charging around with long weapons in a finite space I'm sure you see my point.
£100 secures your place, so if you haven't done so already contact me.

                            Kind regards

First of all, I'm sorry if a couple of my choices on the previous thread (staff and single knife) weren't helpful - I certainly didn't mean to undervalue the incredible opportunity Sifu is offering us here.

I've completely fallen in love with the Shaolin Travelling Dragon Sword (weapon and set). And I've also chosen the Travelling Dragon Spear and 'because my life wouldn't be worth living otherwise' the Butterfly Knives.

I steered clear of the heavier items because I have my doubts whether I could pick them up, let alone wield them effectively, but I also think its completely fair that they are taught if the demand is there, especially from seniors.

Thanks again to Sifu and my Siheng Marcus for giving us this 'beautiful problem' and to everyone who provided information about the individual weapons - this was really helpful to a novice like myself. I found Wei Joo's words about his experience of learning the Sword particularly inspiring and also a little daunting, but in the spirit of 'not being afraid to fail' I'm more excited than scared!
