Course Description - Hau; Visual Arts and Art appreciation

    Wednesday 1st September, 3.00 - 6.00
    Hosted by Anke Verhees

"In my professional life I work with art and artists, and enjoy this immensely every day. I am often struck by the fact that many people have the feeling they have to 'know' something about art to be able to appreciate it. Yes, knowing more can generate a deeper understanding, but appreciating it comes from the heart, and is often unexplainable in words. For me, art is about emotion and inspiration. But, getting to know the stories behind beautiful art works can deeply intensify your experience of those works, and help you to open up to beauty".
    Anke Verhees

The workshop will be held at the world-famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which is filled with great masterpieces from centuries of Dutch culture, including Rembrandt's 'Nachtwacht". You can find more information at http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/. The Rijksmuseum has experienced hosts, who will share with you the stories behind some of the greatest pieces the Netherlands ever produced and let you see a glimpse of the world these artists lived in.

      Course Description - Qin; Singing

      Thursday 2nd September, 3.00 - 6.00
      Hosted by Kirsten Shotteldrier

Do you enjoy singing and also want to be more aware of how you communicate? This workshop will enhance the skills of relaxation, listening and better breathing to develop the range and colour of your voice.

The singing will focus mainly on group-work. There may be a short time for individual performance, so feel free to bring along a simple piece of music or your favourite song, just in case. We may also do some work lying on the ground. If you prefer, you can bring something to lie on.

Kirsten Schotteldrier studied classical singing and directing at the Folkwag Conservatory in Essen and studied with famous singers around the world. For the past 14 years, she has been teaching people of all skill levels and backgrounds how to overcome traumatic experience, false use and to find better expression through their voice.

Course Description - Dan Tian Breathing (aka Cosmos Breathing)

          Friday 3rd September, 10.00 - 12.00 & 2.00 - 5.00
Taught by Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

"The course in Amsterdam on the 3rd is Dan Tian Breathing, a progression from 'Generating Energy Flow' that allows the practitioner to learn how to breathe in cosmic energy directly to the Dan Tian. This skill allows the individual to develop a clear mind and strong presence, which is why I felt it would be useful for all practitioners regardless of their personal objectives in training. I included it for the Scholar-Warrior program since it fitted beautifully (promoting mental clarity, force and confidence) and also because it has been my favourite Chi Kung exercise for many years. I always like to offer the best when Sifu visits so I jumped at the chance to offer this one".
          Sifu Darryl Collett

Dan Tien Breathing, also known as "Cosmic Breathing," is an advanced Chi Kung exercise. It is specially used to expand the mind and cultivate the spirit, while it can also be used to overcome pain and illness and enhance vitality and longevity. In the course you may vibrate with the Cosmos, and experience tremendous peace and joy. Grandmaster Wong will initiate you into this advanced yet simple art to enable you to enjoy these wonderful benefits.

Course participants must have previously attended a Chi Kung course with the local instructors, be training with them or another regional Shaolin Wahnam instructor, or have learned from Grandmaster Wong himself.

Grandmaster Wong, has authored 10 books on Chi Kung, Shaolin Kung Fu and Zen, including the best selling, “Art of Chi Kung” and is the Fourth Generation successor to the Venerable Jiang Nan of the Shaolin Temple. Grandmaster Wong has practiced Shaolin Arts for over 50 years and has been teaching for more than 30 years. He has changed thousands of people’s lives for the better by helping them overcome seemingly incurable diseases and enabling them to add true Joy to their lives.

Course Description - Shaolin Strategy in Daily Life

            Saturday 4th September, 3.00 - 6.00
Hosted by Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

The four levels of skillful application are
            • Miscellaneous techniques; a haphazard and erratic series of responses, the lowest level possible.
            • Individual techniques; dealing with one specific event, but with no follow up
            • Sequence; a pre-planned series of correct actions
            • Strategy; the highest level. An overall cohesive vision that guides and regulates all other actions

By learning how to recognise and operate at the strategic level in all areas of our life, we are able to reach our goals in the most efficient and skillful way. With the extensive history of the Shaolin Temple and with such an experienced host as Grandmaster Wong, this workshop is not to be missed.

              Course Description; Sutra Recitation

              Sunday 5th September, 3.00 - 6.00
              Hosted by Sippe Dourma

This workshop aims at introducing you to the experience of Vedic chanting.

The Veda is a vast collection of hymns heard by ancient Indian sages when they were in a deep meditative state. Collectively they are the most authoritative source of Indian wisdom as they contain information on every conceivable subject. Sanskrit, the classical Indian language, is the language of the Vedas. Over the years the vast information contained in the Veda was preserved and transmitted from one generation of teachers and students to the next in an oral manner. Exact preservation was ensured by adhering to certain basic but strict rules of Vedic chanting without compromise.

Today the recitation of the Veda is still a widely practised tradition not only in India but all over the world. The recitation is not only used to transmit the Indian knowledge but chanting the Vedas serves as a powerful aid to meditation and also as a therapeutic practice using the vibrational effects of the Sanskrit language.

The workshop will give you a feel of the vibrational effects of the Vedic chanting and will provide background information on the Vedas and Vedic chanting. In case you would like to learn the correct pronunciation of a particular verse in Sankrit (Vedic or non-Vedic verse), please send in the request prior to the course.

              Looking forward to seeing you!

              Priya & Sippe

P.S. Some additional background information on Vedic chanting can be found in the following document of the school where we received our training:
