Hello,
In Sifu's 2nd newest Shaolin Kungfu book(sorry don't have it handy for the title), Sifu talks about using dumbbells to develop Iron Fist. Also, in this Q & A from November 2009 Part 2 Sifu discusses using dumbbells to develop "fist-wind", a term meaning your fists go so fast they are like wind.
Have any of you used these methods?
I have tried doing some "30 punches" (using internal force) with 1 lb and 2 lb dumbbells, and found my punches felt more crisp.
Last night I practiced the Four Gates set using the method of "completion in one breath". [Sifu describes this in the newest Shaolin Kungfu book of his (the one with Four Gates in it); he describes it as a traditional method to increase speed of a set, but while maintaing form and force.]
First I did Four Gates using "completion in one breath" with no dumbbells. Then I did it with 1 lb dumbbells. Then I did it with 2 lb ones. Then I returned to doing it with no dumbbells.
It was amazing. In just 10 minutes or less the set had become noticeably faster, without any tension involved. The chi flow of the set was also very nice; I almost felt as though the set was pulling me forward. So then I did the set another time with no dumbbells, just enjoying the feeling of the set "pulling" me through it quickly and effortlessly with form and force.
I was really amazed with this method's effectiveness!
All the Best,
Alex
