  • Full Contact Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan

    Dear all,

Here is some pictures of Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan being used in in a Full Contact San Shou bout.

    Hope you enjoy..../Users/jamiegamble/Desktop/San Shou/Play The Lute1.jpeg/Users/jamiegamble/Desktop/San Shou/Kick The Shuttle.jpeg/Users/jamiegamble/Desktop/San Shou/Thrust punch.jpeg

The first pic shows the Wahnam pattern 'Playing the Lute' in a 4/6 Stance. The second shows 'Kick the Shuttle' or a low 'Tornadao Kick' from Combat sequence number 8. The last shows a 'Thrust Punch' in a bow arrow stance which is many of our Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan Sets.

    I will post more soon.

      Finally,

I got someone that knows what there doing to give me a hand. You can clearly observe Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan patterns being used in a full contact fight. Hence obliterating the common belief that Tai Chi ( and Kung-fu patterns) can not really be used in combat!

        Wonderful!

        Dear Robin Sihing,

Thanks for the wonderful pictures. It seems it was taken from a competition event.
In what event and when were the pictures taken? And who was doing the WahNam Taijiquan?
What was the result of the encounter?

          Nice Siheng Robin!

I'm also interested to know the answers to Joko's questions.

Looking at both of them wearing gloves, I would think that the WahNam Tai Chi Chuan guy is at a disadvantage (no Chin'Na).

What about the rules? Do you just get points when you make contact with your punches or kicks?

          Thank you

            Hi guys,

Sorry for the brief answers to your questions but I thought I would reply to them very quickly before I explode on to the town for friday night!

It seems it was taken from a competition event.
In what event and when were the pictures taken? And who was doing the WahNam Taijiquan?
What was the result of the encounter?
The event was an open Tai Chi Chuan competition near London last weekend. Robin, a friend and myself went for a day trip. There were many form demos throughout the day, some push hands and finally full contact fighting. It was a pretty fun day, lots of laughs and I love watching a good fight and cheering like an egit!

There were some good kickboxers there but I didn't see anyone else using Tai Chi Chuan for fighting. The place was split into two, kickboxers for fighting, and Tai Chi dancers for the forms. Some of the forms were very beautiful to watch but in my opinion they weren't performing real Tai Chi Chuan.

The rules for the full contact fighting were pretty simple. The usual no groin etc. You can throw but cannot grapple on the ground. You get points for hits, throws, pressing or throwing your opponent out of the area and knocking them out. The fight consists of three 2minute rounds.

Robin competed in the full contact fighting and used genuine Tai Chi Chuan to defeat his opponent who was a very fit and athletic kick boxer. As far as I know, that hasn't been done in a public competition for a very long time.

It was great fun to watch and a joy to finally see someone use actual Tai Chi Chuan in a competition. It realy does grate me when I see all these people who say they practice Kung Fu or Tai Chi Chuan yet when the get in the ring they just kickbox. Why do they lie to themselves and everybody else. Why not just say they do kickboxing? It's not that embarresing to admit is it?Kickboxing isn't that bad for fighting, but it's not Kung Fu, so why call it Kung Fu?! I don't know, it just baffles me.

I took more pictures from the fight but I'll wait for Robin to post them himself when he has time.

            Best wishes

            Ronan

                  Hello Robin,

I want to offer my congratulations to you. Can you share more information and pictures with us? This is such a wonderful event that I am certain everyone on the forum wants to know more. For instance, you look very relaxed (Robin is the one wearing the White T-Shirt), were you? And if so do you think it made a difference to your ability/performance?

                  Very curious

                  Kind regards

                    Thanks

Thanks Ronan, for answering those questions, and Lex and LeeWeiJoo for your kind comments.

I have been quite busy recently with work and other responsibilities (like enjoying the coming of Spring) But will post more info and pics now that I have a bit more time.

Ronan was pretty much spot on with the rules, and a heart felt thanks is in order for being and excellent training partner and Kung-fu brother throughout the preparation.
In this full comp ( Open Tai Chi Campionships for Great Britian) there were no points awarded for striking your oponent in the full contact fighting, only for forcing them out of the fighting area (while you remain in), or flooring your oponent with felling techniques or by knockout, It was a best of three rounds so if there is a clear winner in the first wto there is no need for a third.

Although I won the contest in two rounds, I do not beleive the outcome to be of great significance. What is is that I used Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan patterns in actual combat. I used stance's, remained calm, focused and used internal force. All of these things I learnt from Sifu and am exceptionally grateful for these gifts, and the benefits and joy that they give me. Thankyou Sifu

                    all the best Robin

                      Dear Siheng Robin,

That's really impressive, congratulations on your achievement!!

What is also very impressive is the fact that you have been practicing WahNam Tai Chi Chuan for 2 years or so. Compare that with people who practice Tai Chi for 20 years but still can't fight and have no idea what internal force is.

Thank you and Siheng Ronan for the answers, good luck

                      Respectfully,
                      MoMo.

Why, because in our school we place great emphasis on using our Shaolin Arts for what we say we use them for - combat, not talk or flowery fists. Sifu has said many times, he doesn't mind if we loose in competition as long as we actually use what we have been taught. If Robin had won the competition fantastically but had used kickboxing techniques, then I'm sure Sifu and Robin would have been quite disappointed.

Incidentally, Robin used what he had been taught and also won the competition, so its a win win situation you might say But this is no surprise to members of Shaolin Wahnam who do beleive that genuine Shaolin is effective in combat unlike what most people think today.
