  • Preparing for an intensive Kung Fu course in Malaysia

In light of George's thread on his experiences of his first Intensive Kung Fu course, I would like to start a discussion on how you can prepare for such a course.

First of all, Sifu very generously shares a video preview of what material is covered on the course, the first part can be viewed here. Sifu also provides 3 other parts describing and showing what you can acheive in a few days what many martial arts practitioners may never experience, or reach the depths of in decades of training. It is important to note, that after the course, what you have practiced, you have to continue practicing for a reasonable amount of time for you to become effective with the method. You don't turn into a master over night having attended an Intensive course

I am simply amazed at how much information on Sifu's webpages are available so freely to the public. When I first went for my Intensive course with Sifu in Malaysia, there wasn't such material available on the internet, how times have changed with Sifu's website

I'm quite interested particularly in Georges experiences in his thread I linked above. George has already been training in the UK with the UK instructors. He has already practiced moving in stances, chi kung and basic patterns of hand attack and defence. Yet he is attending a course with Sifu and doing the same thing.

"Much deeper level of practice" is how George describes his experience. This doesn't mean to say that George was training poorly back home in the UK. I believe because of his prior training in the UK, George was able to go deeper in his training on the Intensive course and reap much more benefits.

Despite after a intense day training, George still has the energy to write an excellent post, but is able to wake up early and fresh in the morning to wish his girlfriend goodnight. While he is miles away training, he is still able to care for others. Also because of his earlier training in the UK he has already developed some extra energy to carry him through, which he's going to need

Recently the 3 Nations gathering which took place in Brighton this January, focussed on basic skills like moving in stances as well as several other important skills and techniques. You can read some feedback from students, including Georges, in this discussion thread. If you missed this event, don't worry, there will be one next year.

Also, in the UK we have the Summer Camp coming up, which again covers a broad aspect of Kung Fu training, and is taught by Sifu who will be coming over especially.

Its nice to have a dream of going to Malaysia, but if you can't make it happen just yet, try looking for a Shaolin Wahnam instructor near you. We will give you an excellent start in genuine Shaolin Arts whether you want to prepare for Malaysia or not.

This is extremely generous. I hope that everybody makes use of these excellent opportunities.

      Dear blohm :

Extremely generous is not exact as each Wahnam´s Instructor charges his fees for teaching (and there isn't anything bad with that) .

          Interesting point Alberto,

I have heard many people say they would have paid ten times the amount they paid for a course with Sifu. Saying is more than doing I know, but still, they weren't exactly upset to part with their hard earned money, quite the opposite. I have heard similar accounts for the instructors and their students.

If these Arts were cheap, the majority of people would not value them or practice. Some of us also have to earn our living as an instructor.

At one time, Sifu taught for free. One time when a football match was on, no one turned up to Sifu's class because they chose to watch football, how incredible is that !

            Alberto,

I don't understand what you've said in your post. You think it isn't generous that Shaolin Wahnam Instructors offer to teach publicly? I sometimes feel guilty that I'm not paying more when I learn from Sifu or a Shaolin Wahnam Instructor.

              Dear Sifu Michael :

Usually people value things according to its price and i think that for this reason everybody preferred to watch football instead of attending Sifu´s free classes. Generosity or not generosity in teaching is in every instructor´s heart and it doesn´t depend on his or her fees.

                  Dear Alberto,

In so many words at the end of your post you said, generosity or not generosity doesn't depend on fee's. Your first post said "Extremely generous is not exact as each Wahnam´s Instructor charges his fees". I also don't understand where your now coming from, but never mind, lets move on

Just talking about price, I would just like to point out that Sifu has openly put online a preview of his entire Intensive Kung Fu course, and for those that are perceptive enough, could probably learn something by just watching and reading, especially comprising a balanced training program that values great health, combat efficiency and spiritual development.

The information shared below is generous and also free on the internet ! Shaolin Arts in the past were closely guarded secrets, Sifu shares so much. You don't have to pay for any of this, what have you got to loose ?

In order to clarify my point, "extremely generous" should be teaching without expecting more that the development of the disciple. Is that is not possible in some cases as Sifu Michael points out then generosity takes a new meaning related to the complete or incomplete knowledge that the teacher is willing to transmit.

                      Alberto,

I'm afraid you seem completely confused. You comments here, confirmed again in particular in your last post, are proof of this.

Without having any real appreciation of what it is that Sifu has to offer personally, through his web pages or through his chosen instructors, you assume to be able to judge over the generosity (or lack of) shown. You also attempt to tell others what they should perceive in this sense.

If you want to know whether or not Sifu and the other Shaolin Wahnam instructors are being generous or not I suggest you ask their students. They are the only ones in a true position to judge for they have experienced what is being offered and at what price personally.

I'm glad that the discussion of fee's and generosity has sparked a new thread, its a worthy discussion.

So back on topic with this thread, I would be interested to hear from Molly who posted in the "Intensive Kungfu Course - Live" thread :

For those of you who are still trying to decide to come here to do this course, my advice is this: stop thinking, just come and do! I had a million doubts before coming here. I thought I wasn't ready. I've no regrets coming whether I was ready or not. I've gained so many skills in such a short time, and the course isn't even finished! Plus I think all this qi flow is making my hair grow ! Many thanks to Sifu and all my kungfu brothers and sisters for making this the best experience of my life! I want more!!!!!!! Cheers! Molly
Molly, first of all, thank you for sharing your comments.

Could you tell us what you did or didn't do to prepare for the course you are now taking?

Had you taken any classes with any of the Instructors, or attended a regional course with Sifu?

                        Take care,

That's an interesting question Mike. I wonder how those attending with preparation from a Shaolin Wahnam instructor experience the course compared with those who go with no such preparation.

                          Any takers?

I'd loveto share what I did to get ready for this course.
First of all, don't be fooled, I didn't go into this course cold at all. I've been extremely blessed to have a wonderful training partner who has already done an intensive and specialized shaolin course with Sifu. So I was very lucky to go into this couse knowing all the combat sequences, sets, and how sifu would use them to progress into free sparring. Well before I came, I was familiar enough with those external aspects. What I got out of those course was a deepening of those skills, affirmation of my own internal force (I can't stress enough how important regular stance training is), and confidence to relax in free sparring and put people twice my size and mass to the floor (sorry guys ). There's a myriad of other things I'll post when I can finally get my head together. So before I came here, I worked on stance training, did lots of LTS and pushing mountains, trained the combat sequences and sets, read the Complete Book of Shaolin and the art of Shaolin Kungfu, and practiced stepping and footwork. For those who do not have a practice partner available, and are new to Wahnam, I would suggest reading Sifu's Shaolin kungfu books (the qigong books are great too), getting the sets and sequences from Sifu's website, and watching the videos of previous courses. The course videos give you an idea of what will be covered, and the set videos give a beginner a good external reference. Sifu says that it's good to learn the forms even if they are done in an external manner. Once you can teach your body what to do, the finer points come very quickly. If you have a training partner, even one who's not a kungfu practicioner, I'd suggest working on the sequences with them, it will multiply the benefits of the course exponentially. Also, just relax, smile from the heart, and enjoy the experience. Even if it seems like it's hard and you're forgetting everything, you'll be amazed at how things come together in your head that you thought you forgot completely. I cannot that Sifu and my Sihengs enough for this experience. It's brought my kungfu a life I never thought it would have for ten or twenty years. Cheers and best wishes to everyone. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to enjoy Georgetown! Take care! Molly
