  • Techniques from Shaolin 5 Animals Set vs Shaolin Monkey Set

    Hi folks,

Michael Durkin was recently up in Edinburgh and one of our morning sessions ended up with us moving out of the conventional sequences and into the techniques of our Specialised Sets. The first sequence we came up with was rather clumsy but when we had a cameraman later (on his lunchbreak ), he filmed it for us so we could see it ourselves. It is still clumsy and both Mike and I wish to stress that it's just a first version and as such, the sequence still needs work but you're seeing it only a few hours after it's first appearance.

Shaolin 5 Animals Set vs Shaolin Monkey Set (using Sequences 3 & 4 as the
base, to focus on Adjusting Footwork and Pressing Attacks)

My thanks to Hubert for his prompt and highly efficient work in allowing us all to see the clips and photos on the Forum so swiftly - well done!

The names of the two poise patterns are

Lohan Asks The Way (on the left left) and Spiritual Monkey Emerges From Cave (on the right).

And while Mike's strike may be countered, it leaves a very nice opening for his follow up .. and so on and so on .

And the video clip that shows the 'What happenned next' part will follow once we've had some suggestions of what may or may not have actually happenned (by either or both parties).

Thanks for sharing those pics Darryl Siheng.
As all the Monkey patterns have so romantic and philosphical names , like Monkey takes Bloom or Lazy Monkey watching sky or spiritual Monkey emerges from cave, it would interest me what's the name of the pattern of the third picture.

          Respectfully,

Perhaps a little naughty monkey underneath, either that or a squirt of water in the face!!!

              Hei Jonny,
I see, you felt free to enjoy yourself

I'd say Clever Voodoo Monkey sinks down to distract Shen with right paw

              Warmest regards,

                Accepting weakness

                Hi Mike and Darryl

If I’m the “Monkey” I would try to give a little souvenir with a left dragon (or something like that in the monkey stile) in (near) the eyes of Mike.

                Greetings from Portugal

                  Nice replies folks,

Jonny is actually commenting on a story I told him about sparring with Andrew Sihing in Switzerland, where I started with a mouthful of water with the full intention of spitting it over him to allow my opening. However, Andrew noticed something was different and refused to commit until it went away.

                  Roland,

I'll get back to you with the name of the pattern.

                  Antonio,

Nice counter and yes, I was staying in the order of sequence 3 at this point (mid, high then low attacks). However, the next pattern assumes that Mike Sihing has already countered the 'brushing fingers' option (or Shortcut).

To progress into the next exchange, both Mike's progression and my counter are shown in the next picture.

Precious Duck Swims Through Lotus (on the left) and Naughty Monkey Teases Pig (on the right).

Mike's response can be found in the Shaolin Five Animals Set, which can be viewed here for those who are unfamiliar with the Set.

                    So .. suggestions?

                      Very nice pics!

I think the last one is "Gollum gives Frodo a trashing at the base of Mount Doom while keeping eye on the One Ring".

                        Pattern Names

And as per Rolands request and with Sifu's generous help, the names for the respective patterns are now listed above each photo.

                          Hi Darryl...

                          My guess is:

Mike lowers to a left Dragon's Chi Spreads Across the River
immediately followed by a Snake Strikes Vital Point.

This should be done like one movement.

[I don't know the Monkey Set]

Greetings Siheng Michael and Siheng Darryl!

Thanks for posting the informative pics! I know that Michael is a focused, no-nonsense sparring partner based on my experiences during the april 2005 intensive kung fu course. I really respect him as a siheng, instructor and friend. I hope to travel to the UK one day soon to see the Wahnam family there

                              Greetings everyone, a few clues...

The nature of the Five Animals in this sequence is very pressing. And as we have seen the nature of the Monkey has been retreating but with surprises

Antonio, nice suggestion. Although with Darryl on one leg I'd like to keep pressing him rather than back off for a second with Dragon's Chi Spreads Across River.

I need to defend high, but there is also a big target I can attack.
