Fundamental Patterns
This post is designed to act as a reminder for students of Shaolin Kung Fu from Shaolin Wahnam. It shows the names (in English and romanised Cantonese) of the fundamental patterns learned in the first 6 levels of our syllabus.

Got Force..?!
So much force training
Are some of them patterns taking from the form and done repeatedly for a number of times? Thank you.

I'm afraid I don't understand your question MoMo
But maybe a small clarification may be useful ... For force training, the students normally begin with a series of stances without the formal use of hand forms (i.e. with the fists placed at the waist). Soon the practice of "One Finger Shooting Zen" which is a fundamental force training set (set = defined sequence of patterns -- maybe you meant this when you said "form") is included. Later the original stance sequence is enhanced by the addition of appropriate hand forms (resulting in new patterns). Later still, the students specialise their force training further - often using mainly Golden Bridge. Hope that helps, Andrew

Dear Sihing Andrew,
Thank you for the explaination. Sorry I had two spelling mistakes in my question. I had just woken up at that time and my brain wasn't working properly ![]() My question should have been: Are some of "the" patterns "taken" from the form and done repeatedly for a number of times? I'm asking if the "Force Training" list that you posted is all just "static" stances, or are some of them with movement. For example in our Tai Chi Chuan practice we take a pattern from the form, say "Grasping Sparrows Tail" and just keep on repeating that pattern a number of times on both sides. This way also counts as force training, but I wasn't sure if this method is also used in Shaolin Kung Fu training. I'm guessing that it is. Take care.

OK I understand now. The last 10 patterns or so are used in "One Finger Shooting Zen" training. It is a dynamic set i.e. there is motion involved. So the answer would be yes.
The list shown is the standard list of "Kung Fu" patterns in the syllabus to level 6. It is not an exhaustive list of force training methods employed in Shaolin Wahnam. Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I am very interested to know more about the 6 leg stretching exercise. Do you think you can give details of how they are done? If it is not proper for you to reveal the details I do understand. If you can I certain I appreciate it. Best Regards, Frank |

Leg Exercises
Hello, Dr. Frank Loo
The description of the 6 leg stretching exercises can be found at Sifu Wong's book "The Complete Book of Zen", Chapter 17. The explanation is concise, but clear, direct, and effective. I have been practicing all the 6 exercises every morning daily since October 2004; inspired by Sifu's mention in that book that he himself practiced the leg exercises for 2 years in order to be able to sit at lotus position for sitting meditation. I practiced also "Deep Knee Bending", described in another Sifu's book "Chi Kung for Health and Vitality". I have posted my experience here: http://wongkiewkit.com/forum/showthr...1305#post21305. Now I have had wonderful results. I have completely recovered my knee pain that I suffered for quite some long time, which according to medical diagnosis was caused by excessive uric acid. At that time I could not squat down because of the pain at my back knee. The first few months I felt mainly as physical exercise, but after attending Sifu's Intensive Chikung Course in April this year, I was able to perform the leg exercices as Chikung practice. I can feel the power of my movements originated from the ground to the feet, directed through the waist (or hips) and then distributed to the arms and hands, at wherever direction according to my intention. It is amazing for me that not only I do not have any more pain at my knees, now I can perform some jumping without problems and without injury to my knees, because I do that while in chi flow. I notice that other people of my age in my area can not do that (I am 52). Now I can perform some Chen-style Taijiquan forms which require some thumping and jumpings, despite the fact that some people mentioned Chen-style is not suitable for those over 50. Another thing is that now I can sit at semi-lotus position. Thank you, Joko

Dear Dr. Frank Loo,
Joko gave you some very useful informations. Indeed almost all the exercises, which Sifu is teaching are shared openly in his books. The Art of flexible legs can be read as joko already mentioned in the Complete book of Zen. But you will also find them in the Complete book of Shaolin and in the book, the Art of Shaolin Kung Fu. Furthermore you will find all the exercises of 18 Lohanhands on some websides of my brothers and sisters: For example on: http://www.shaolin-wahnam.ch/qigong/18_lohans_e.htm You will see, that some of the exercices of the Art of flexible legs are part of the 18 Lohanhands. Joko: many thanks for sharing your experiences with us. It is very inspiring!! Although I am a little younger I am also much too stiff in my legs for the Lotusposition May the story of Sifu inspire us to reach our goals Respectfully, Roland
