  • The Amazing Gem Chi Kung

    Hello Everyone,

I would like to share some of my experiences with Chi Kung while I was in Malaysia and after I went and practiced on my own back home.

The first time I went to Malaysia in 2002, I didn't know what to expect, as I had only read about Chi Kung mostly in the internet and Sifu's great Q&A series. Chi Kung had interested me so much, so I had to go and check what was it all about. At that time I was 24, and didn't have any health problems that I know of. The only thing that I knew was that I was always a bit lacking in energy, especially when I had lots of things to do on that day. For example by night time my friends would want to go out somewhere, but I would be too tired to do go anywhere, so I just stay at home and go to sleep early. The other thing that bothered me was a constant heartburn that I used to get daily, but was kept under control by taking antacid pills all the time (had this problem for a few years).

The first day of the Intensive Chi Kung course, I found out that the students there had experience with Chi Kung before, and most had been to Sifu's regional courses. The first day I did not feel any chi flow, and there was no movement or anything. But some of the other students were moving, and one other guy was shouting really loud! Not feeling much did not worry me, I kind of got a good "vibe" from Sifu and really felt this "presence" from him, a presence of a true Master. So I just followed his clear instructions and enjoyed the practice sessions. The second day during the morning practice, I still felt nothing. But as before I just opened my heart and enjoyed the practice. After the practice session was done, I got ready to go for the trip and went to the lobby. Here I suddenly felt a sharp pain in the area below my belly button, it was just for a second, then went away. Then it came back again a few more times. I went to the restroom thinking that maybe I had diarrhea, but when I went there, there was nothing. So I went out of the restroom, and again I got that sharp pain again. Then the pain subsided, and I didn't feel it anymore. After the second practice that day, I went to my room and just laid down on the bed and watched TV. My body felt very relaxed, and I started feeling this pressure in both my eyes, it was quite strong but not painful, also at the same time I felt a similar feeling in my ears, as if they are getting cleansed and opened. It was a very soothing feeling, and the more I relaxed the more I felt it. I stayed like that without moving for about 45 minutes, just enjoying this unmistakable feeling of chi, and letting it cleans my body. After that I really felt as if both my eyesight and hearing have improved. I'm guessing now that I had a blockage at the "dantian" area, that is why I got this sharp pain, and probably that's why I always felt lacking in energy. When that blockage cleared, the chi started going to other areas of the body that needed cleansing. In my case the eyes and ears. The third day of the course was where I had the best practice sessions, and also felt the chi in my arms and legs. But I never got any movement like some other students did. I should also add that two students commented during the course that while we were practicing Sifu would go behind us and move his arms in a certain way, I did not notice that cause I always had my eyes closed. Sifu was probably directing Chi to us, I think he did that during the second and third days of the course, and that explains why I and other students had a strong feeling of chi. And that is probably why many students mention that after they go back home from an Intensive course with Sifu, they might feel that they had lost some of the energy that they had gained during the course. So it's true, we do get some of Sifu's energy when he is around us, and that's is why our training sessions are always better when Sifu is standing near

The first thing that proved to me that Chi Kung is very effective, is when I arrived home. I got home in the morning at around 9AM, The flight was long and I had not slept since the day before. What is really amazing is even though I had no sleep except for maybe 1 hour in the plane, I felt so energized, I also felt the happiest I had felt in a long time. I had this smile on my face that would not leave all day I did not feel the need to sleep until about 2AM the day after! My Chi Kung did improve a lot during the first few months, and my energy level improved gradually. But there was some days where I felt more tired, and one time I was sick for more than a week, even though usually I never get sick for more than a day or two. I say this so people would know that while our Chi Kung practice is healing and improving our body and mind, the problem that we have might become more pronounced, but after you get past that period, you will feel better than ever before. And that is what happened to me for the most part. And you should not stop your practice, have faith in yourself and in the high level Chi Kung that was generously passed to us by Sifu.

I would like to share two spiritual experiences that happened to me within the first year of practicing Chi Kung. I noticed from the start that I enjoyed the standing meditation after we finish each practice. So when the months past by and without noticing it, after completing each Chi Kung session, instead of standing for a few minutes and finishing I was standing for 15 minutes or more. So one day after standing and enjoying my chi flow, I just stood there thinking of nothing like always, but this time something different happened. I just wasn't there, wasn't standing anymore, and wasn't in my room. I was "nothing", I wish I can explain this more, but it's not explainable. This nothingness was short, I thought less than a minute. After concluding my practice, I was shocked to notice that over 45 minutes had passed from the time! Another time a few months after that, I was also standing in this same mediation, and on that day I had an unusually strong Chi flow all over my body, felt like waves of hot and cold energy flowing all over. And at that moment I just remembered a saying of Grandmaster Ho Fatt Nam that I read in one of Sifu's books, he said "If you can walk one mile, you can walk a hundred miles". When that thought came to my mind, the energy flow in my body increased so much, it started "glowing" outside my body and expanding, it felt as if I merged with the energy around me. This did actually feel very very good, and it stayed for about 20-30 seconds. Those feelings can not be explained but actually have to be experienced. And I'm sure many of Sifu's students have had similar experiences. I want to add that I did not get those experiences again, even a year after they had happened, but I did get other experiences on a much smaller scale. But like Sifu says just enjoy them when they happen and don't get attached to them.

Finally I will say that taking a second Intensive course with Sifu was a very good move on my part. Not only my skills and energy level have improved tremendously, but also my confidence level. Sifu was very kind to come on the forth day after the course and teach three of us the first ten Loan Hands, "Grasping Sparrow's Tail", and he corrected my 3-Circle Stance which I had just started doing at home before going there (learned it from his book).

Sorry if this was too long, and thank you for taking the time to check this out.

    Respectfully.
    MoMo,

Thank you Andrew. I forgot to mention about my heartburn condition, the first 7 or 8 months it did not improve much. Then I started directing the chi to my stomach, I did that for less than two weeks and my hearburn problem went away for good!

      Later.

Thank you for posting your interesting and as the others said inspiring words. Also respect to you for keeping up the practice over years - that takes some commitment in itself.

It is also interesting to hear of your 'non-linear' progress - that seems to be the rule for all (many?) of us - three steps forwards then one or two back. The net movement may always be forwards but in the short term 'going backwards' can be discouraging.

I was also interested in your sorting your stomach problems by 'direct action' - this says to me that in some ways we have been given a toolkit. Sure keep up the long term stuff but its not necessarily wrong to solve 'annoying' and apparent problems now and again.

Is qigong much known in your country/region?

          Best regards.

            Dear MoMo,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and welcome to the forum

Your story will be a great inspiration to other students, especially those who may not experience a lot of movement in the beginning stages of their practice and for those whose symptoms often become worse before improving.

After coming home from Malaysia in 2000, my back problem often became worse, but I could always hear Sifu's voice saying that this is common while the chi is uprooting old problems. He referred to it as 'good pain'. It is funny how the mind can play such tricks on us, because when I considered it as 'good pain' it didn't hurt as much. After each bad episode, I was much better than the time before and experienced gradual progression over 8 months until the pain finally disappeared altogether.

              Chris.
Thank you Chris. I'm very excited and happy that I finaly found a Tai Chi Chuan teacher here in my country, as I've wanted to learn Tai Chi Chuan for a while now. Three months after I started doing my stance training, I was about to start learning the 24 simplified set from Sifu's book (like Sifu recomended me to do), and that's when I saw an add in the paper that says "Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung Master". Like the saying goes, when you are ready, they will come. When I went to the Master, I proudly stood in my stance and told him that I can do this for 25 minutes. He said "Very good, I do it 8 hours" !!! So yea, I've been learning from him since then.

Also respect to you for keeping up the practice over years - that takes some commitment in itself.
Thank you Mike. I have to admit that except for the first 4 or 5 months, I've been for the most part doing my Chi Kung once a day. But it is still very beneficial, and I still feel the energy growing.

Is qigong much known in your country/region?
Not really, but people are slowly starting to hear and learn about it. So I'd say in a few years it will become quite popular.

Your story will be a great inspiration to other students, especially those who may not experience a lot of movement in the beginning stages of their practice ..
Thank You Joan. The movement I experienced was just shaking, my legs used to shake, after some months the shaking was quite strong. Had this shaking for almost the first year, then it started slowing down. Now I mostly get gentle flowing movements, these movements did not start with me until about 18 months after I started Chi Kung. And I know that some people can get them on the first day, but everyone is different. That's why people should just enjoy their practice and not compare with others, and let whatever comes comes

              Have a nice day everyone.
              Regards.

                MoMo,

Thanks for your story. I always heard that one should go with what comes and not compare with others. I used to think I knew what that meant and did it. As time goes on I realise how difficult that is for me sometimes.

In my first course there was a real dilemma - Am I moving because I am doing what the others are doing or is the fact that other people are moving giving me the freedom to move - Am I doing this or is it the flow of chi doing it. I genuinely tried to let these thoughts float past but it wasn't easy.

I also practice largely on my own. I also found (or was found by) a Tai Chi Chuan teacher. I am slowly coming to see how they are the same thing. How "stickiness" in movement seems to represent something I am resisting. Also, I have come to see the value of practicing Tai Chi Chuan as a martial art - both in the company of my own instructor, Sifu and another master. Suddenly experiencing some of the 24 form in a completely new light having "seen" and experienced it in combat application. White Crane spreads its wings suddenly made a new kind of sense.

Good luck with the practice, the not comparing and the enjoyment.

                      Dear Dr. Kok and Paulo,

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement!

I apologize for the late reply, as I haven't been checking or participating on the forum for a while now. You know life takes over sometimes

Since my last post on this thread, I had also taken Sifu's Intensive Tai Chi Chuan course in January-2006 which was really electrifying

Shaolin salute to Sifu, my Wahnam brothers and sisters, and all visitors to the forum.
