Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks

    Series 2
"Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners"

    Attack 3 - Series 2 -
'Ramasoon Kwang Kwan - Giant Throws An Ax'
The attacker (Black) leaps or jumps in with an over-head elbow, crashing onto the opponents skull, neck or collar bone.

    Defence 3 - Series 2 -
'Golden Dragon Plays with Water and Fell Tree with Roots'
The defender (White) retreats into a False-Leg stance and threads the oncoming elbow, with the pattern 'Golden Dragon Plays With Water'.
At this point, the defender can apply a felling technique, in this case 'Fell Tree With Roots', but why do both combatants slow down for this demonstration?

Take a closer look; not only is the defender about to smash his opponent onto the ground, but he also has a grip of his throat!
This application is effective as it is deadly and would be dangerous to apply at full-speed. Video Clip 3 - 2

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks

      Series 2
"Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners"

Attack 4 - Series 2 - 'Nak Mood Badan - Serpent Sneaks To Ocean Kingdom'
The defender (Red) initiates with a middle or high side kick, the attacker (Black) retreats, avoiding the kick then counter attacks with a low side kick, sneaking under the initiators leg.

Defence 4 - Series 2 - 'Angry Leopard Charges At Rock'
The defender (White) quickly withdraws his kicking leg, to protect his groin and back knee.
This adjustment of footwork places him in a position to strike the attackers leg, and offers great opportunity for a devastating follow-up. Video Clip 4 - 2

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks

        Series 2
"Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners"

Attack 5 - Series 2 - 'Prarama Dean Dong - King Ram Walks In Forest'

The attacker (Black) leaps in with a deadly flying knee, aimed at the heart (chest) or head.

Defence 5 - Series 2 - 'Separate Sea to Seek Shells and Golden Cockerel Locks Throat'
Luckily, the defence to this attack was filmed slowly, otherwise it may have been difficult to spot the subtle movements and principles.
The defender (White) steps back, avoiding the strength of the attack, while brushing the knee aside as it's power dissipates.
With perfect timing, he steps back in and behind the attacker (Black), then secures two formidable Chin-Na techniques to the throat and elbow.
With his safety insured, the defender fells the attacker, which if required, could be fatal. Video Clip 5 - 2

Attack 6 - Series 2 - 'Narai Kham Samud - King Narai Crosses Ocean '

The attacker (Black) leaps in with a flying side-kick, targeting the head, throat or chest.

Defence 6 - Series 2 - 'Tame Tiger with Beads and Golden Leopard'
The defender (White) yields to the oncoming momentum from a flying side-kick using 'Taming Tiger With Beads' .
Just as the kicker (Black) lands, he is vulnerable to attack, so the defender takes advantage by pressing in, taming and striking the ribs with a Leopard hand-form.

"Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners"

Attack 7 - Series 2 - 'Bansean Thodsokan - Cut the Giants Neck'

The attacker (Black) leaps in high with a devastating, but risky attack where he smashes both knees and elbows into the opponents head or upper section.
There are numerous variations of this technique, some from being held in a clinch.

Defence 7 - Series 2 - 'Separate Clouds to Look at Sun and Leopard Punch'
The defenders (White) counter is quite beautiful.
He steps to the side, rather than backwards; while floating the attackers elbow.
With perfect timing, the defender closes in, just as the attacker lands. Timing here is crucial, and must be after the strength has exhausted but before it gathers once again.
The defender follows on with a Leopard strike to a soft spot, and from his position, has numerous options, should he need to continue. Video Clip 7 - 2

I truly wish I could view the videos .... but sadly my work blocks all video content. Nevertheless, the pictures and commentary alone are priceless.

Many thanks to Sifu and Jamie for this wonderful series.

..... can hardly wait for series 3

P.S. Sifu's constant use of picture perfect forms (including tremendous stances, of course) is a joy and inspiration --- not just in these series. An example for all of us to aspire to.

                    • Dear Jamie,

Thank you for posting this video series. It is always great to see Sifu in action!

By the way, I noticed the latest one (series 2 attack 7) links to the video for "series 1 attack 7".

                      Warmest,

                      Hubert.

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks

                          Series 3
"Amazing Techniques that can be used by a Fragile-Looking Lady"

Attack 1 - Series 3 - 'Jarakhe Fad Hang - Crocodile Sweeps Tail'
The attacker (Red) turns to avoid a level punch and kicks the temple or jaw with a hooking motion, connecting with the heel.
This attack can often be applied without prior initiation i.e. the defenders punch.

Defence 1 - Series 3 - 'Naughty Money Kicks Tree'

This counter is deceptively simple, but extremely safe and effective!
The defender (White) steps diagonally away from the oncoming attack, to ensure safety while not giving away too much distance.
Additionally, as he steps aside, he kicks the attackers groin or supporting knee with a Whirlwind Kick, connecting with the shin or perhaps the instep in some situations.
He is now behind the wounded opponent and in an excellent position to escape or follow-up. Video Clip 1 - 3

                              Attack 2 - Series 3 - 'Yan Erawan - Push Elephant'
The attacker (Black) rushes in to perform a sideways knee, often used to avoid and counter a high strike.

                              Defence 2 - Series 3 -
                              'Reverse Hand Plucks Peach'
The footage here was shot at a slow pace, to highlight the subtle movements from the defender.
By stepping aside with a Unicorn Step, the defender (White) is safe from the knee attack without the need for any strength or resistance.
The principle of 'Near Enough To Strike But Far Enough To Be Safe' is evident in this movement.
Because of his good positioning, he can counter attack immediately from here, without having to move again; in this case tearing the sexual organs.
This highlights a important point; that many attacks seem dangerous or ferocious to the uninitiated, but are actually quite risky for the attacker. Video Clip 2 - 3
