    Dear Sifu Robin,

I liked a lot you new website and the applications of Peng.
I am waiting the other 3 (4 in Wahnam ) with anticipation.

A 'simple' movement that can really do miracles is the Hiding Flowers in the Sleeves which can be used for the first two applications (I have tried them) and perhaps for the third one (I haven't tried). Even though I do not know so much about Tai Chi Chuan and I cannot replicate the movements so good I can feel that the feet/waist movements in these applications are similar also for the Hiding Flowers in the Sleeves but not exactly the same.

    Some details:

-In the defence against a high strike, for safety reasons because I am just a begginer , I retreat in false leg stance while I hide the flowers and then I move away any threats (ask the way) with my left hand before I attack with fierce tiger.

-In the release against a double grip my movements are exactly as your peng application Sifu Robin (the rotation of waist can help me to overcome a stronger and not so willingly partner )

-In ‘wrong’ an elbow joint hiding the flowers I use a sidestep at my left and simultaneously I "grab" the right hand of the attacker behind his back just like the picture of Sigung in Fierce Dragon Across Stream (2) at http://www.shaolin.org/taijiquan/com...equence12.html but with false leg stance and beeing much closer. It's difficult to describe it but my sequence is Hiding flowers (defense) - sidestep to the left - Hiding flowers again (grab arm). My right hand is circulating like a snake to the opponent's arm, I must not lose contact (or I will have a piercing in my heart/throats/eyes) and I have to grab his wrist with my left hand. A similar movement exists in Ninjutsu that I was practicing and I remember the description of circulation the arm like a snake in the branch and I was finding poetic .

Anyway, I hope not to offer confusion. If I find a camera and a willing victim/partner I will capture it
    With warm regards,
    Charalampos Nikas

      Sweet,

      Thanks guys,

      Next installment is coming soon.

      Babnik,

Thanks for you description of 'Hiding Flowers in Sleeves'.

You made some excellent points, and 'Hiding Flowers' is a great example of a Shaolin pattern that has a thousand and one different uses.

Even though I do not know so much about Tai Chi Chuan and I cannot replicate the movements so good I can feel that the feet/waist movements in these applications are similar also for the Hiding Flowers in the Sleeves but not exactly the same.- Babnik

I know what you mean about the patterns having some similarities, but not being exactly the same.

In the Shaolin pattern you also have the shifting of weight, synchonised with the hand pattern and waist movement.

However the the feeling for me between the two patterns is different. The Shaolin pattern is more direct, initially it is easier to execute and to put force into.

The Taijiquan pattern is more flowing, more circular and takes a bit more time to perform well.

For me, neither approach is better or worse, just different. I think those two patterns nicely highlight some interesting points between the two arts.

thanks again for an interesting post.

      Robin

                Good news!

                Dear Brother Robin,

Your excellent articles on Grasping Sparrow Tail inspired me a lot to the point I respectfully asked Sifuji whether he would agree to teach and deepening in the applications and skills of Grasping Sparrow Tails in his March 2010 Taijiquan courses at the Blue Mountain.

                Sifuji said YES!

We are very excited here about that.

I’m looking forward to read your next articles on this amazing topic. Thank you!

                A hug of brother,
                Rama

                  Excellent!

                  Hi Si Heng!

                  Thats excellent news!!!

and I still have more articles on 'Grasping the Sparrows Tail' to post aswell! I've just been away from home and too busy to post but they will be coming...honest.

It is very cool that Sifu will elaborate even more on 'Sparrows Tail' for us lazy Taijiquan people, it means we can practice even less patterns

                  Best
