Dear Shaolin Family members,
It's my great pleasure sharing my chi kung experience with you all. I was lucky to have the opportunity to join Chi Kung intensive course in June 2008 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This is followed by Shaolin Kung Fu course the following year.
What had driven me to join the course at the first place?
I was suffering from left shoulder pain for about 7-8 years before any contact with Chi Kung, progressively worsening over the years to the extent that i felt like cutting off one quarter of my trunk (left upper quadrant inclusive of the left shoulder) when the pain came. It is difficult to describe the pain but, definitely affecting my quality of life very much including the motivation to work, energy level (always feel tired), emotion, and mental clearity. Sleeping on the left shoulder would usually aggravate the pain. Painkillers could not help. Physiotherapy with hot bag, ultrasound, or acupoints massage would relieve the pain but its effects lasted for only 2-3 days the most. Though the pain came on and off with varying severity, i had some precious days when i didn't feel the pain at all. Those were the days i felt very well & healthy.
I did not remember any obvious trauma to my left shoulder before other than the history of carrying heavy bag using my left shoulder during my university days. As most people would do, i seeked help from few orthopaedic surgeon. They could not really understand my pain. They were not so worry as i did not have any neurological deficit clinically other than some muscle wasting over my left shoulder region of which they claimed that i'm just thin build. I had my MRI of the whole spine done in March 2007 which showed small PID (Protrude interveterbra disc) at 3 levels i.e. the neck, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. Those findings could not explain my left shoulder pain as they did not compress at the nerve root at the exit foramina. One orthopaedic dr advised me to see a neurologist for nerve conduction study.... i didnot go as i think it will probably be normal... What next after that? They might refer me to see a psychiatrist if every investigation turned out to be normal....
Having a pain like this of unknown origin & cause....I felt a bit hopeless, helpless, and down on & off.
One day, a friend of mine, who is a sonographer, told me about the good changes she noticed about her boss, Dr. Lim (consultant radiologist) after having learnt Shaolin Chi Kung. I was impressed. After having talked to Dr Lim one day, he managed to convince me that Shaolin Chi Kung would do good to my left shoulder pain. At the same time, he introduced Dr Damian to me.
Thanks to both of them who taught me "lifting of sky" while waiting for the next Chi Kung intensive course. After practising lifting of sky for few months, my left shoulder pain became less severe and less frequent the attacks.
Of course, i learnt a lot from the subsequent Chi Kung intensive course from Sifu Wong directly. I feel that i'm energized and has gained a new life after learning Chi Kung. For the 1st year of practice, i experienced frequent flu, of which i was reassured to be detoxification process. I continued and persevered with my chi kung practice as i enjoyed the overall beneficial effects like chi flow, self manifested chi flow... My life become more contented without the disturbance of the left shoulder pain.
I was motivated by Dr Damian to proceed to Shaolin Kung Fu Course the next year. Really grateful to him for having prepared me for the course.
I find that the Chi Kung effects are more enhanced with Shaolin Kung Fu practices.
Having practised Chi Kung for 2 years+ and Kung Fu for 1 year+, I find myself have much more energy, sleep less, more stamina, more healthy....my left shoulder pain has almost completely gone, rarely suffer from severe flu again. If i were to get flu, the symptoms will usually be mild and the fever will subside after i session of chi kung practice without the need to take Paracetamol.
What is great is my experience during the standing meditation... sometimes i can hear my heart beats, feel blood flowing within a vessel as if trying to unblock a blockage (may be is chi flow, i can't really differentiate)... At times, i can hear breathing sound of our earth loudly and feel my body consists of many many molecules which vibrate according the direction of wind blow. Those feeling are really great.... feel energized, happy, and fresh after each practice...
What amazed me is that my repeated MRI in January this year showed completely normal spine... All the PIDs have completely disappeared from a western imaging...being a western medical dr... i really cannot explain this.
Hereby, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Sifu Wong, SiHeng Dr Damian, and SiHeng Dr Lim for giving me a new life...Really really appreciate it.
Best regards,
Kok Neang Tan
