Journey to Kuantan
It seems that I've recorded about 12 pages of notes which include some previously unknown stories about our Sigung, Sitaigung and Sifu and took and gathered some very rare photos including those of Sitaigung. If folks find this thread of interest and we get a lot of views I'll continue. Many of the photos are large and I think it will be easier to post them on my website. I'll start posting them if there is interest.
The group journey to Kuantan began at Siheng Chun Nga’s wedding at the end of 2008. While there for the celebrations I met our Sisook Hoo and his lovely wife. I sent him an email last year and he invited me to visit him during any upcoming trips to Malaysia. He told me to pass on the invitation to Wahnam family members, which I did, at that time, here on the Forum. As I planned to come to Malaysia I made a plan to accept this offer and visit alone, primarily to pay some kind of respect to Sigung and SiPo, but also have an opportunity to see our Sisook again. However, I considered that there may also be others that would also like to visit as well. Thus, Sifu made an announcement on his website.
So, the day following the Wing Choon course 7 of us took a bus that Wei Foong had organized for us and drove to Kauntan, Malaysia, in order to meet our Sisook Hoo and to visit and pay respects to Sigung Hoo, who passed in 2000 and SiPo (his wife.) who passed last year. Kuantan is located on the East Coast of Malaysia, almost opposite of Kuala Lumpur. It is a long journey, about 7 hours, and even much longer if your driver and guide get lost (which I suspect happened to us ☺.)
Sisook was born in Jan. 1963, is married to Sisham (the title of one’s Sisook’s wife) with 3 children and one grandson. He is a Master Doctor of TCM, practicing since 1978. At the age of 12 he told his mother that he was leaving school. SiPo answered, “Oh, really? Well you have to tell your father about this.” When Sisook told Sigung, Sigung replied, “If you’re going to leave school then you will follow me”. This meant that from that point forward Sisook spent all of his time assisting and learning from Sigung. He learned everything from Sigung including Shaolin, Taoism and Chinese Medicine. At the age of 19 he received his degree in Acupuncture from Singapore and later, from 1990-1996 he attended and graduated from Xiamen University in China. One of his Masters in China was a prominent Physician named Shang Tian Yu, of Beijing, famous as a top traumatologist and orthopedist. As I later learned Sisook is an expert in all aspects of Chinese Medicine but stands out in Traumatology and Orthopedics. Shaolin Masters were renowned for being the best traumatologists and our Sigung was no exception, thus, Sisook had a rare opportunity of learning from the best.
The first morning Sisook met us at our hotel and took us to a Chinese breakfast at a favored restaurant and it was a fun, outdoor breakfast. Sisook is a bit of a connoisseur of Chinese Tea and brings his own along to most meals to suit the occasion. This is just one of the treats of dining with Sisook.
