Hi classic,
The ren and du meridians are important in spiritual cultivation and developing the "small universe" energy flow. Sifu's question and answer series provides a more comprehensive explanation of this. I recommend going to his website and taking advantage of the google search.
Warmest regards,

In chinese medicine, or energetic physiology, the Front meridian goes UP to the mouth, and the Back meridian also goes UP. This is the normal, everyday working of the energy flow in the Ren and Du meridians. In Qigong, we aim to restore the direction of the flow as it was before the child was born, while he was still in the womb, which is the Microcosmic Orbit. These meridians are Extraordinary meridians, meaning they do not belong to the more regular 12 Meridians that are connected to the main orga system in chinese energetic physiology (there are 8 Extraordinary meridians, but only these two have their own points, the other meridians share points with the 12 regular meridians).
From the point of view of energetics, these meridians have great importance in regulating Yin and Yang in the body, since the Rev (Front) meridian touches all the Yin meridians of the body, is able to mix the various qi of the organs and can also regulate excess or deficiency flows. The Back, Du meridian, does the same for the Yang meridians which travel over the back of the body. Each of the meridians has one "key" acupuncture point which is also an energy gate of some importance, each of which is a reunion point for all the Yin or Yang energies of the body. They are the Bai Hui point at the top of the head for Yang energies and meridians, and the Hui Yin point for Yin energies and meridians, in the perineum. The Bai Hui point is frequently used in acupuncture (I used it on three patients today, for instance) and is a key point in many problems (depression, headache, energy deficiencies, etc...). The Hui Yin point less so, not because it isn't a useful point (it can be very efficient) but simply because it's a point that from the point of view of many patients is not a point that they wish to have needled, due to its location.
Hope this helps! Many qigong books, as well as acupuncture books, have EXTENSIVE information on these two meridians, and I highly recommend that you get at least a little bit of education in this are if you're interested in making qigong a part of your daily practice and life.
