Dan, WahnamCH and I were discussing the differences between Zen and Pure Land Buddhism recently. And I would like to post the conclusion of our discussion here for the benefit of everybody.
To many practitioners, Zen and Pure Land are two different schools of thought in Buddhism. However, to those who have cultivated for a long time, they are one and the same.
While Zen Buddhism focusses on Emptiness, Pure Land stresses on Form.
The Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra says that Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is Form. Thus at the highest level there is no difference between Zen and Pure Land.
Please read some of the commentaries pertaining to the statement above by famous Zen Masters that are recorded in Chapter 19 in Sukhavati: Western Paradise.
These commentaries have been translated into the English Language by Sifu Wong Kiew Kit.
