  • Catch that Bird!

Dear Brothers, Sisters and those I dont know yet,

Have you ever heard of the Tai Chi Chuan pattern 'Grasping the Sparrows Tail?'

It is a series of fundamental Tai Chi movements that are common to all of the Major styles of Tai Chi Chuan.

    Now here is the thing.

With these 'Basic' but profound movements it was said the Yang Lu Chan (1799-1872) a.k.a 'Yang the invincible' defeated all his opponents (I'm think some Shaolin masters were among them) Grandmaster Yang lived in a time in China when a challenge match to the death would not have been uncommon, so his unbeaten record speaks volumes of how high level his skill must have been.

However, given the 'gentle' nature of these patterns, it is hard to envision how these simple looking movements could have so many uses in combat. Indeed until I began training with Sifu I was also at a loss as to how it could be done.

Also, even though these patterns are common to all of the Major Styles of Tai Chi Chuan, it is very hard to find any pictures or explanations of combat applications for these movements.

With this in mind I recently accosted my to Kung Fu brothers Jamie and Joshua when we were together in Malaysia and took some photos of various applications of the movements of 'Grasping the Sparrows Tail' I will be releasing them in article form in the coming weeks on my incredible website www.TaiChiChuanThailand.com

I will be showing three basic applications for each hand pattern, so thats 15 applications for 4-5 movements, and thats just some basic applications -in reality the amount of applications from these movements is almost limitless!

The first couple of Posts are now up, the first article with 'Juicy' applications in it was just posted today.

Ill be interested to here any of you comments

Wahnam Tai Chi guys.. have you got any other nice uses for the patterns you'd liked to share?

Shaolin Guy's any similar patterns in Shaolin, or like wise 'simple' movements with endless applications that you'd like to share?

you can find the articles here

    All the best

Excelent and very helpful article Uncle Robin, looking forwrd to the other ones!

Wahnam Tai Chi guys.. have you got any other nice uses for the patterns you'd liked to share?
Your explanations are great and very interesting, I haven't seen the elbow joint one before, very nice. I could think of another simple one, having the space opened, an attack to the side of the throat, used with some power and the body movement it could be very efficient. Using a short knife it could also be useful to cut your oponents throat, not very compassionate, and definetly not something we will use, but anyway efficient.

            Best wishes,

            Simon

              Dear Robin Sisook,

It was great fun to read of your travels.

When I read of the lengths you have been to, to find a genuine, high-level master, I can't help but feel extra grateful for having 'stumbled' upon Sigung and Shaolin Wahnam.

Shaolin Guy's any similar patterns in Shaolin, or like wise 'simple' movements with endless applications that you'd like to share?
Golden Dragon - It seems to have an endless variety of ways for slipping through or sliding along even a well-covered opponent's guard.

              Best of Luck with everything

                  Happy

                  Hey brothers,

Glad you enjoyed it, theres lots more coming.

It was so nice to take the pictures with Jamie, who off course had a Shaolin counter for every movement

                  Hey Simon,

In refference to using the movement with a dagger in hand, you are exactly right!

I have seen Sifu demonstrate an application of 'Immortal Waves Sleeves' in a similar fashion except he used his hand like a slashing dagger, to quickly whip across the front of someones throat. As you said, that one is only for serious situations.

Nick, I thought the 'Golden Dragon' might descend into the conversation

Any pictures or explanations of its uses would be great.

                  best
