I've been practicing the horse riding stance for about 2 months and I'm up to roughly 5 minutes...sometimes I find it very tough to do the whole 5 mins without stretching out - i.e. into a right or left bow arrow stance, then back to horse riding....
Is that acceptable training, or is it essential to stay in the horse riding stance for the whole duration ?
It is correct to train both horse riding stance and bow arrow stance, and your practice may include both stances.
However, if you are 'straining' or struggling to reach five minutes in horse and are not relaxed; and you then use bow arrow stance to take quick breaks from horse riding in order to say you can reach five minutes, then you are neither training your horse stance, or your bow arrow stance correctly.
The important thing is to relax. Maybe some days you will achieve five minutes. Maybe some days you won't. But if you are relaxed and your form is correct then your practice will be correct. Eventually you will do more than five minutes in horse riding and stay relaxed for the whole time - in fact you'll be wondering what all the fuss about five minutes was
There are some excellent existing threads on the forum focusing on horse riding stance; have fun searching them out!
All the best.

Thanks for the reply, thats exactly what I was doing ! Like you say relaxation is the key and thats what I'll concentrate on now rather than being fixated on the actual duration
