  • A Story

    Good day, everyone.

This morning, while going through with my old things, I found an article in an Indonesian newspaper's column printed in 1979. Yes, it was more than 30 years ago; I was just commencing work then. Now, after retirement, reading the article again this morning, it made me astonished with how deeply the writer's understanding had in his writing. The story was written in Indonesian.

I rewrite the story here in two parts. Similar stories regarding the allegories are common elsewhere, so I hope I do not violate the copy-right of the writer.

    ---
    One fine morning ... .
A retired minister was sitting in his house, enjoying his now leasure time. But, somehow, he could not rest. His mind kept wondering.
Suddenly, someone appeared at his door, knocking. Surprised, he stood and greeted his visitor, who happened to be his childhood playmate. He wondered why this old friend now visited him, at the time after his retirement as minister, not while he was still in power.

"Good morning, Minister. Glad to see you."
"What! Minister? Please do not address me this way. I am not a minister any more. My power has all gone. But what a pleasant surprise! How happy I am to see you."
"I was passing near here, on the way home from visiting my newborn grandson. But, is there something disturbing you?"
"Not at all! I am very happy. Now I have all the time to enjoy myself."

After a while, the ex-minister brought his visitor to his garden, enjoying the beautiful scenery.
"Oh! Now that I am retired, I would like to visit our home country town, and perhaps start living there. Yes, I want to be a farmer!"
His friend gave a little cough.
"Yes, that's it! By becoming a farmer, life will be much simpler. That makes me happier! Then, we can be close friends again, just like the old time."
    His friend kept coughing.
"What's the matter with you? Why do you keep coughing? Is there a problem with your health, now that you are not young any more?"

"A priest was meditating by the river near his dwelling ..." his friend whispered.
"Are you dreaming?" asked the ex-minister.
" An eagle flew over the sky, and dropped a little mouse from its claws," continued the old friend. "The priest stood abruptly, catched the little mouse, and then nurturing it lovingly at his hands. And, the little mouse became a pretty baby girl"
Now, the ex-minister began to listen attentively to the story.

"The little mouse became a pretty baby girl. The priest then raised her as his child.
To cut the long story short, now it was about time for the girl to get married. Her father wanted her to marry the sun. But the daughter declined, saying that the sun was not her suitable mate.

The priest then asked the sun, "O Sun, perhaps you know someone who is stronger and mightier than you?". "Yes, surely, there is. It's the cloud. He can cover the earth from my hot shine".
But her daughter still declined the cloud as her mate.

"O Cloud, do you happen to know someone who is stronger than you?"
"Yes, the wind surely is able to blow me anywhere."
    Still the daughter declined.

"O Wind, who is stronger than you?"
"It's the mountain! However strong I blow to move it, it remains at its place!"
Still. The daughter was not impressed.

"Oh what now? O Mountain, is there someone who is mightier than you?
"Yes! The rats! Although they are small, they can conquer me, the huge mountain, slowly, but surely, they are capable of crumbling me"
"Dear father, thanks! Yes, now the search is over. The rat is suitable for me.
    ---
    The ex-minister's eyes lit up.
"Thank you, my old friend. I know that you always understand me. Now, do you approve of my plan? Will you go with me, and together we become farmers? I've been thinking this for a long time. I've always wanted to be a farmer! Even when I was powerful as a minister, I thought I'd be happier if I were a farmer!"

    --- . ----

    Hello Sihing,
Thank you for sharing this story. The story reminded me a little of the development and controlling effect of the five elemental processes: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Although the rat was helpless against the sun and the wind, it was powerful against the mountain, etc.

    Warmest regards,

      Dear Joko Siheng,

Good story, Thank you for sharing.

My impression was that it is a story about us, humans, judging others by appearances.

My first "Western" impression when the daughter refected the sun was, "Wow, she is pretentious. She will end up not getting in the end".

This impression was induced by similar Western fairytales with this message.

When I finished reading the story, I was embarassed for my own first judgement. I thought, well I was too quick to judge her, but she was only looking for her inner self, through looking for her perfect mate. She was just aware enough what she really wanted. And I somehow envied her for this knowledge and courage to do so.

So, my conclusion, not to judge others, but rather try to understand and to listen for the hidden truth. And to have courage to look for what one really needs!

Thank you again. I certainly liked it a lot!

        Dear Joko

Thank you for sharing this story.

I am reading Sifu's book on Chinese Medicine and must say your story reflects the cycle of the five elemental process. Create and destroy.

Best wishes to all in Indonesia

            ...... ...

"Yes, ... I want to be a farmer! I wish to become a farmer! My dear old friend, please say something! Thanks for telling your story! I know you understand me ...."

The old friend did not reply; ... the story did not end yet.

"Father, ... is it too much if I have another request?"
"Oh dear, ..., what is it?"
"Oh my father, I know that we have been happy together all these years. ... I wonder if I could return to my previous form. ... as a mouse... "
"But, even as a mouse, I'll still be your loving daughter ..."

The priest held his daughter in his arms, together they prayed, and the beautiful daughter returned to her previous form.....

            ---

The ex-minister was stunned, and then clutched his friend's arms. "Now, what do yo mean by this? Why did you let the story end like that? Is there something you want to tell me?"
"Please, calm yourself... it is just a story."

"Oh, by the way, did you say that you wish to be a farmer?"
"Yes, I wish to be a farmer. What's wrong with that? I told you earlier that even when I was a powerful minister, I wished I could be a farmer!"
"Why? Were you not happy as minister?"
"Of course I was happy. But, as I grew old, I realized that life would be happier if I could live a simpler life! Yes, I wanted to live a simpler life! The simpler, the happier ..."

The old friend did not look at his friend; his gaze was to the limitless sky.
"The sun is the source of scorching heat," he said slowly. "The cloud is thick, it contains rains and lightning, so powerful. Yet, the wind can blow it. And look at those mountains.
And those small mice, the small ants ....
Plants grow. Water flows. The wind blows, the sun shines, the ants crawl ...
Who is the strongest? The biggest one? Or, the smallest?
Why praise the powerful and look down at the weak?
Are they not what they are? Is it natural to praise ones while looking down at the others?
Can we just accept what they are ... ?"

"So, do you mean that I cannot be a farmer?" the ex-minister became agitated now." Do you mean that I cannot wish to be a farmer? That you won't allow me change my life? Is there a law that prevents someone to change his life?"

"There is nothing wrong to want to be someone", replied the old friend. "Nothing can prevent someone's wish. Even anybody can want to be the President of this country. There is nothing wrong with that."
"So now, what is your point? What is the problem?"
"Anybody who wants to be a minister, is not a minister. Someone who wishes to be a farmer, is not a farmer. It is what they do, and how they do it, that counts. Not what he wants or wishes to do ... "

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            End of the story.

                      Dear Joko,

Thank you for sharing this story. Reading it I had a number of impressions and thoughts, some of which I will share with you.

I wonder why the minister felt that he had lost his power. Did the power come from his social position which he lost, or from divine favor which he lost, or some combination? Am I missing something?

I am reminded of Jesus' teaching, "the first shall be last, and the last shall be first."

I am reminded of my own youthful ideal of becoming a farmer. ( I am now a teacher. Perhaps when I retire...)

                      The dinner bell has rung.

                      Thanks again.
